Well-Being Initiative: PTSD: A Normal Reaction to Trauma

Prior to 2020, 15% of U.S. nurses in general units showed symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Post-pandemic, experts expect those numbers to double – meaning 1 in 3 nurses could suffer PTSD.

June is PTSD Awareness month, giving us even more reason to make sure we recognize the symptoms of PTSD and know how to lower the risk.

If you suspect you or a loved one has post-traumatic stress disorder, seek treatment and support from a healthcare professional. For virtual support and resources to lower PTSD risk, visit the American Nurses Foundation’s Well-Being Initiative.

ANA Posts Policy Brief on OSHA COVID-19 Standard (Member Content)

On June 21, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published an emergency temporary standard (ETS) in the Federal Register.  The ETS requires health care employers to take concrete steps to protect employees from COVID-19 on the job.  This ANA Policy Brief discusses key provisions of the ETS.  To access the full policy brief and read more, click here.

Membership Assembly Corner

The ANA Membership Assembly is the governing and official voting body of the American Nurses Association (ANA). It identifies and discusses issues of concern to members and provides direction to the ANA Board of Directors.

One of the key responsibilities of the ANA Membership Assembly is to determine policy and positions for the Association. The meeting of the ANA Membership Assembly provides a forum for discussion of critical nursing practice and policy issues and input from a broad cross section of nursing leaders.

The ANA Membership Assembly is comprised of ANA members who are representatives from ANA’s constituent member organizations (C/SNAs), Individual Member Division(IMD), affiliated organizations, or members of the ANA Board of Directors. Specifically,

  • A total of 200 representatives, including two representatives elected from each C/SNA and the IMD, and an additional number of representatives elected from each C/SNA and the IMD in accordance with the apportionment policy applicable to representation at the Membership Assembly, reflecting the proportional dues payment made to ANA by the C/SNAs and the IMD, up to a total of 200 representatives; and in a separate pool of representative seats:
  • One representative from each of ANA’s Organizational Affiliates, and
  • The ANA Board of Directors.
