CHARLESTON, WV – March 28, 2024

The West Virginia Nurses Association (WVNA) expresses its gratitude and support for Governor Jim Justice’s decision to veto HB 5105, which would have weakened or eliminated vaccination requirements for virtual, private, and parochial schools in the state. This critical decision prioritizes public health and the well-being of our communities, particularly our children. West Virginia’s model childhood immunization program will remain as is.

Childhood immunizations are vital in protecting individuals from serious and preventable diseases, safeguarding public health, and maintaining herd immunity within our population. By vetoing HB 5105, Governor Justice has shown a strong commitment to evidence-based health care practices and the protection of our most vulnerable citizens.

The WVNA commends Governor Justice for his leadership and dedication to the health and safety of all West Virginians. We stand in full support of this decision and look forward to collaborating with the Governor and West Virginia healthcare groups on future endeavors to promote education and awareness about the importance of childhood immunizations.

Moving forward, the WVNA remains committed to advocating for policies and practices that promote public health, prevent disease, and ensure the well-being of our communities. We are grateful for Governor Justice’s veto of HB 5105 and the opportunity to work together towards a healthier future for West Virginia.
